ANNE TERESA DE KEERSMAEKER
Drumming XXL
1h
The irresistible rhythm of the music propels the dancers into a choreography that seems complex yet insidiously simple.
An emblematic work by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Drumming was created in August 1998 to a composition by Steve Reich. The irresistible rhythm of the music propels the dancers into a choreography that seems complex yet insidiously simple. Like the music, the dance starts from a single phrase of movement, explored exhaustively and tirelessly over the course of an hour through countless combinations, variations and transformations, inverting it, speeding it up and slowing it down. In the tradition of the monumental projects initiated by the Conservatoire since 2019, Drumming XXL brings together 70 performers from École des Sables – the legendary dance school founded in Toubab Dialaw, Senegal by Germaine Acogny – P.A.R.T.S. – the school founded by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker – and the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris. Dancers from the various schools and ensembles worked on a new version, rethinking several sections of the original piece, making their own transformations of the original material, composing duets or trios, and using the underlying structures of the original choreography to create other constructions.
Free standing.
This project has been labelled by Paris 2024 in the framework of the Olympiade Culturelle.
