On stage, a multitude of crumpled paper balls evoke rough drafts that have been cast aside and abandoned. Are we in the studio of an artist in search of inspiration, in the bedroom of a teenager preparing for his high school exit exam, or simply in a child’s room? The space toys with our perceptions. Bodies and surfaces in perpetual mutation answer one another in a game of hide and seek. What is a rough draft, if not an invisible, forgotten phase, an attempt at a sketch? The rough draft is the playing field in which the world and its occupants can make mistakes, change direction, and reinvent themselves. Paper gives birth to the mask that transforms the face, creates the character, and invents new identities. The drawing is alive here, with shapes and colours changing, disappearing, or revealing themselves according to the colours projected onto it. Sous la surface is an invitation to view our attempts as a creative tool, and as a way to exceed ourselves and build our self-confidence.
