A 2024 Creation

Australia’s greatest contemporary dance company presents two very different pieces by the choreographers Rafael Bonachela and Melanie Lane.

Established in 1969, the Sydney Dance Company has attained an unusually high level of excellence in forging an abstract, physically demanding gestural vocabulary. Twofold is a shining example of this, uniting the reprisal of a piece created in 2021 by its director, Rafael Bonachela, and a new work by Melanie Lane. In Impermanence, the Catalan choreographer explores the points of contact between beauty and devastation, in harmony with the quartet piece commissioned from American composer Bryce Dessner. It is fuelled by the emotions that were revoked in 2019 by the fires that ravaged both the Australian bush and Notre-Dame de Paris. In Love Lock, Australo-Javanese choreographer Melanie Lane explores the form that folkloric dance could take in the twenty-first century against the backdrop of the electronic soundtrack by English composer Chris Clark. The dance reflects the dangers of a changing world as well as a dialogue between cultures, and serves to move us, alert us, and inspire us.
