LYON OPERA BALLET / MARLENE MONTEIRO FREITAS
Canine Jaunâtre 3
1h30
Yellowing Canine 3, created in 2018 for the Batsheva Dance Company, now forms part of the repertoire of the Lyon Opera Ballet. In this work, choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas has orchestrated an athletic encounter of the third kind that blurs the boundaries between humans, animals, and machines.
The legacy of childhood carnivals in Cape Verde deeply influences Marlene Monteiro Freitas’ choreographic work, marked by genre disruptions and identity confusion. Her creations draw from childhood emotions—wonder, discovery, and play—to generate an organic vitality. “A choreography is a living, unpredictable form,” she says. In Canine Jaunâtre 3, Freitas explores sports, focusing on its codified rituals, gestures, and media-fixed imagery. Twenty-five dancer-teammates, wearing identical jerseys and cartoon-like faces, blur boundaries between human, animal, and machine. The result is a jubilant, humorous display brimming with energy and originality.
