FLAMENCO
In June, La Villette moves to Andalusian rhythms. Renowned artists and rising stars (many of whom have been featured at the prestigious Cante de las Minas festival) will electrify the stage at La Villette.
“Flamenco is a secret language”, wrote the Andalusian poet Juan José Téllez – of the persecuted, of gypsies from India, Sephardic Jews, and Moors who, happy to be alive, chose the brightness of palmas, the energy of zapateados, and the depths of palos. All these singing styles tell of love, loss, pride, and struggle. A secret language comprised only of the initiated, but which resonates, which involves listeners in what the poet Federico García Lorca called duende, the mysterious, emotional, and visceral energy that flows through the performer and the spectator during a performance like a trance state. For Festival Flamenco, La Villette invites spectators to discover or rediscover these bailaoras who, schooled in this ancient language, never cease to reinvent it. These artists, whose backgrounds are intertwined with contemporary and traditional dance, breathe new life into this Andalusian art with their original forms and revisited aesthetics, but without altering its intensity.
