How does one set the bodies of a hundred dancers in motion? To meet the challenge of this extraordinary act of transmission, Boris Charmatz has choreographed a physical and vocal swarm of an environment featuring key moments from his career.
In 2019, on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Merce Cunningham, the Paris National Conservatory of Music and Dance (CNSMDP), La Villette, and the Paris Autumn Festival inaugurated a large-scale partnership involving a score composed for one hundred students inspired by this artist’s work. Developed with major names in American dance such as Trisha Brown and Lucinda Childs, this dance times one hundred explores new territories with each new version. This year, Boris Charmatz, who trained at the Lyon Conservatory, has taken up the challenge of putting his style to the test of this multitude. For the choreographer of La Ronde and Happening Tempête – conceived for one hundred performers – the relationship to the plethora of gestures and the community of bodies is expressed as a transmission of energy and a burst of life that are communicated to everyone. By making use of excerpts of his works, such as 10000 gestes and Liberté Cathédrale, Charmatz and the CNSMDP students will perform a protean score of movements, voices, and states that reveal the singularity of each body within this multitude.
