With GLA55, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker has decided, for the first time ever, to work with pieces from the beginning of Philip Glass’ career. Led by six dancers and musicians from Ictus and Bl!ndman, this piece in ten movements unfolds as a living geometry of repetitions, rotations, and spins, pushed to the point of fully losing one’s bearings.

In GLA55, Keersmaeker returns to one of the foundational gestures of her career: delving into minimalist music as deeply as possible to generate a powerful choreography. In 1982, she created Fase, set to Steve Reich’s early compositions, which laid the foundations for an oeuvre that remained closely attuned to this style of music and its principles of repetition and variation. Today, for the first time ever, as an extension of her relationship with the minimalist music of that period, she has choreographed Philip Glass’ early works. Composed between 1969 and 1970, Music in Contrary Motion, Music in Fifths, Music in Similar Motion, and Music with Changing Parts belong to a decisive period in Glass’ career, during which he invented a continuous musical flow based on the repetition, displacement, and transformation of short, hypnotic musical phrases. Keersmaeker has found in these works the ideal way to continue her efforts to push this limited language to its limits, to the point of exhausting it. In circles, spirals, ellipses, and whirls, dance here becomes geometry in motion. Through the very act of repetition, each gesture strives for the infinite.
