2026 creation

Feda Wardak has developed a body of work whose aesthetic power stems from its unrelenting humanism. Here she has imagined a monumental installation inhabited by a choreography by Saïdo Lehlouh and music by Deena Abdelwahed. It is a singular yet utterly essential experience.

A visual, choreographic, and acoustic work all at once, this installation by Franco-Afghan artist Feda Wardak takes the form of a nave, in which a helical staircase spirals upward, as if it were a giant drill. The setting for this performance is conceived as a poetic investigation, the endlessly turning screw propelling us on an immersive journey whose three strata – sky, earth and the subterranean – recount a vertical story of water, extraction, and resistance. As Western drones see only anonymous heat pockets from above, the gigantic twisting motion activated by the choreographic performance by Saïdo Lehlouh set to Deena Abdelwahed’s music depicts those who live on the ground and fight for its survival: Afghan “water seekers”, the unseen artisans who repair the karez, the ancient irrigation tunnels crushed by so many bombings, so that life may once more gush forth in a place where modern technology has provoked a desert. This enquiry brings us in close so that we may witness a horrific type of extractivism: one of raw materials, bodies, and cultural identities. At a time when returning to a human scale paradoxically seems a monumental undertaking, Feda Wardak has created a work of great redemption and humanity.
