INTERNATIONAL ILLEST BATTLE 100% KRUMP
Since 2013, La Villette has hosted one of the most prestigious battles: the International Illest Battle brings together the best Krumpers on the planet for a series of jawdropping shows. The worldwide final is not to be missed for any reason!
A battle discipline as well as a choreographic one, the International Illest Battle presents for the second time an evening dedicated to the latest in 100% Krump choreographic creation. Popularized by Rize, the documentary by David LaChapelle, and more recently by Les Indes Galantes, the opera directed by Clément Cogitore, Krump unites the Madrootz collective under the leadership of Grichka Caruge. Born with the new millennium, this dance emerged as an outlet for the violence experienced in the ghettos of Los Angeles and is performed in battles following specific codes. Demanding in terms of effort and the physical and emotional tension it requires, its movement is recognizable by its expressive theatricality.

Dexter GRIOT – solo
The performance Griot takes the audience on a journey through a dialogue between a griot and a dancer undergoing an initiation rite. This conversation unfolds between an instructive voice-over and a body absorbing its powerful words, guiding the dancer through key stages of the ritual process.
Through poetry, proverbs, praise, and intense movement, the piece immerses itself in a transformation where the soul and spirit of the dancer—future griot—rise. The questions raised by initiation rites lead step by step toward wisdom. Transmission is at the heart of the relationship between a master and their student or a parent and their child, but it is never a linear path. Between resistance, deep questioning, and revelation, the journey becomes a search for both ancestral culture and self-discovery.

The upheavals societies have faced since 2020 due to the pandemic have pushed individuals to their deepest limits. Yet, each person experiences this reality in their own way. From our personal perspectives to our roles and responsibilities in society, everything is shaken.
It is within this kind of personal quest that Krump and its raw energy take shape. Inner states shift at lightning speed, giving rise to bodies vibrating with intensity, reflecting these turbulent times. They expose both the best and the worst within us all.
