Carmen is celebrating her 150th birthday this year. Created in 1875, Bizet’s heroine continues to be relevant today. Inspired by this fiery, free-spirited figure, Israel Galván has imagined an inevitable encounter between Carmen and flamenco: two myths born in Seville, one on stage, the other in the street.
A master of contemporary flamenco, Israel Galván is constantly pushing past the limits of his own dancing. With each creation he reinvents a language through bold and surprising collaborations. In his new piece, he takes on one of the most iconic figures of Opéra Comique: Carmen, the tragic heroine created by Prosper Mérimée in 1847 and immortalised by Bizet in 1875. Since this character’s creation, she has scandalised audiences for her independence, sensuality, and rebel spirit. Ever fascinating, this gypsy has crossed various eras without losing any of her subversive force. In this version, Galván has focused the plot around three figures: Carmen, her lover Don José, and Escamillo the matador, playing each one in succession. Accompanied by three opera singers, a flamenco singer, and the Finnish men’s choir Mieskuoro Huutajat, he metamorphoses profoundly throughout the conflicts, passions, and tragedies that characterise Bizet’s opera.
