La Petite Tuk

On the heels of La Petite fille aux allumettes (The Little Match Girl), the company Oh ! Oui… has adapted one of Andersen’s lesser known fables that is nevertheless as grand and symbolically rich as his more famous stories. La Petite Tuk (Little Tuk), a young girl who works too much, embodies the power of imagination in face of life’s travails.
With a mother who works nights and a musician father constantly on the road, Tuk does the shopping, cares for her little sister, and cooks all the meals. Exhausted and far too young to shoulder such responsibilities, she catnaps everywhere: at school, in the hallway, on a bench… In her sleep, voices emerge from her dreams, whispering advice to help her reimagine her reality. Three actor-singers perform all the roles in this immersive theatre piece, which blends video and live music. Like a contemporary cabaret where dreams brush up against harsh reality, where social gravity sparks humour and gives rise to moments of poetry, Alexandra Fleischer and Joachim Latarjet offer a feminine retelling of Andersen’s fable. The result is a musical narrative steeped in the major social issues of our time. Together, they have crafted a work that affirms a deep trust in children’s intellectual capacity to engage with what may elude them, drawing them into a space of contemplation, if not rebellion, and inviting them to imagine otherwise.
