With Commençons par faire l’amour (Let’s Start by Making Love), Laura Bachman offers a reinterpretation of Jean-Philippe Toussaint’s tetralogy (Faire l’amour, Fuir, La vérité sur Marie, and Nue) through the prism of the body, movement, and the feminine.

After her first, acclaimed piece performed at La Villette, Ne me touchez pas, a duo with Marion Barbeau about touch and its many dimensions, Bachman returns this season with Commençons par faire l’amour (Let’s Start by Making Love), a new performance about relationships, the feminine, and the body in transformation.  Freely inspired by Jean-Philippe Toussaint’s five-novel opus, this new work explores relationships, the feminine, and a changing body through the character of Marie, a figure marked by heartbreak, loss, and love.  In close collaboration with the author and the actors, the choreographer delves into this literary material to draw the elements of a new theatrical score in which words and motion answer each other. With one actor and four dancers, the piece becomes the site of a dialogue between text and body, a field of sensory inquiry into the feminine, its representations, and its possible reinventions.
