ZIP ZAP CIRCUS
Moya
Suitable for 5+ years
1h00
Ten young artists from the South African circus school Zip Zap present an extremely colourful spectacle in which acrobatics and dance are used to draw the portrait of the rainbow nation that Nelson Mandela dreamed of.
In one playful, generous movement, Moya is both a spectacular performance and a portrait of ten young artists whose individual stories reflect a nation’s destiny. Moya is a Zulu word that means spirit, air, soul, and wind. It is an engine of life that can bring out the best in each one of us. The term is related to the concept of ubuntu, which emphasises interdependence and our sense of universal responsibility towards one another, a core philosophy of the Zip Zap School. Established in Capetown thirty years ago, the school uses circus arts as a tool for growth and emancipation for South African youth living in the grips of instability and violence. The spectacle comprises a staggering range of circus techniques (aerial straps, Cyr wheel, juggling, bouncing balls, trapeze, lifts, and more) as well as many styles of South African dance to reveal the various characters, to recount their desire for other worlds, exchange, fulfilment, and comradery.
