BALLET DE L'OPÉRA DE LYON

Lucinda Childs’ signature work Dance is a radical exploration of movement that has become a foundational work of postmodern dance. Sustained by the repetitions in Philip Glass’ music and the video component created by Sol Lewitt, the piece engages in a continuous, uninterrupted flow of lines, runs, and geometric motifs. Created in New York in 1979 and included in the repertory of the Lyon Opera Ballet in 2016, Dance has retained all of its power and continues to captivate viewers with its modernity. In parallel, Alessandro Sciarroni created HØPE for the Lyon Opera Ballet, taking his inspiration from the two-step, a popular American social dance. Derived from European ballroom dances and later shaped by migration and cowboy culture, this style is used here to explore repetition, endurance, and the dynamics of partnership. Based on a simple rhythmic structure, it opens a space in which gestures are extended and unfold over time to reveal an interplay of variations, rhythms, and relations between the performers. Between geometric construction and the persistence of a motif, this double bill features two styles of movement in which the physical engagement of bodies finds a powerful form of salvation through effort and endurance.
