In Liebeslieder [“Love Songs”], Benjamin Millepied uses Johannes Brahms’ Liebeslieder-Walzer to compose a ballet in which love takes the form of a multitude of relationships. Eight dancers, eight singers, and two pianists create a meeting point brimming with desire and its many contradictions.

True to his open, multidisciplinary artistic approach, Millepied continues his exploration of dialogues between different mediums in Liebeslieder. After numerous collaborations with visual artists, musicians, and composers, here he has partnered with the Les Métaboles Choir to give body and voice to Johannes Brahms’ Liebeslieder-Walzer. Beneath the apparent simplicity and lightness of the waltz, the German composer expressed a broad range of feelings that we associate with love, from tenderness to joy, expectation, melancholy, soaring, and even imbalance. More than a simple accompaniment, music here becomes a way to explore love relationships in their diverse, fluid, open, and at times contradictory forms. It offers Millepied a living material that he works through to reveal its tensions, impulses, and inflections through movement. Liebeslieder turns the stage into a space where love is sought, becomes unclear, flourishes, and reinvents itself, a field of sensory experience in which bodies and voices explore the complexities of our feelings.
