BOY BLUE
Cycles
Approx. 1h30 with intermission
An emblematic British hip-hop company, Boy Blue has performed on the world’s stages for more than twenty years. In Cycles, choreographer Kenrick “H2O” Sandy and composer Michael “Mikey J” Asante have gone back to the basics, focusing on the connection between dance and music.
Founded in 2001 in East London, Boy Blue soon became one of the major exponents of hip-hop choreography, at the crossroads of urban cultures and stagecraft. Kenrick “H2O” Sandy and Michael “Mikey J” Asante have developed an oeuvre in which dance is inextricably linked to musical composition. In Cycles, the two artists have returned to the very essence of their art, movement and its musicality, to create a piece that highlights this relationship. In distancing itself from a narrative staging, dance here is seen as a direct response to music in its interplay of echoes, correspondences, and sophisticated synchronisations. Performed by nine virtuoso dancers, the piece moves as a constant flow of accelerations, suspensions, slides, and surges in which various hip-hop styles converge, from popping to locking, and from krump to body wave. With its sculptural lighting, Cycles constructs a compellingly abstract work that presents a spectacular, high-intensity hip-hop for the stage, where technical rigour meets the shared joy of movement.
