Since 2013, La Villette has welcomed one of the most prestigious battles: the International Illest Battle brings together the best krumpers of the entire planet in a string of mind-blowing shows. The worldwide finale is an event absolutely not to be missed!
Popularised in David LaChapelle’s documentary film Rize and then Les Indes galantes, the opera staged by Clément Cogitore, krump features the collective Madrootz, led by Grichka Caruge. Born at the dawn of the new millennium, this dance constitutes a release for the violence that people have endured living in Los Angeles’ toughest neighbourhoods. It expresses itself in the form of battles that follow precise codes. Demanding for the physical and emotional effort and tension exerted, krump’s gestural language is readily recognisable for its highly expressive theatricality.
